Since from last couple of months, Google Panda has been the most widely talked and shared issue among the webmasters and SEO professionals. Popular SEO forums and blogs are junked with threads and posts regarding Google Panda update and its effects on SEO.

Being a renowned SEO services provider, we at Websys have been answering our clients and fellow webmasters regarding our experiences. Since form the very first day we have been keeping an eagle’s eye on every single project of ours and finally decided to share our experiences on the same with you all. So let’s start from the beginning.

Evolution history of Google Panda:

As we all know that Google has always been trying to refine their search result so as to portray itself as an ultimate search engine, which is far away from the actual definition.

“The ultimate search engine would basically understand everything in the world, and it would always give you the right thing. And we’re a long, long ways from that.”
- Larry Page

In the course of narrowing the gap between truth and reality, Google keeps on updating their algorithm so as to serve the best possible search result. Apart from indexing, Google had already incorporated nearly 200 metrics for evaluating a websites before it appears in the search result but, the gap is still there. Therefore Google has rolled out a new way by increasing the scalability of their Machine Learning Algorithm. By using this algorithm, it can be assumed that it will now be capable of categorizing websites more efficiently which will be based on empirical data regarding user statistics and website performance.

What Google Panda really is?

It’s the machine learning algorithm that we were talking about which has been recently incorporated with Google ranking algorithm. The effect can be estimated by its impact which already influenced around 11.8% of search queries (as reported in Google official blog).

Google-Panda-Algorithm

What Google can do based on this algorithm is segregating a bunch of sites that people like more from those sites that people like less. But the question is what these likes are all about and what the actual metrics are. An exact answer to this question can only be delivered by Google search engineers or the one who originally developed Panda (Navneet Panda).

What we can do is prediction based on Panda after effect statistics.

Among the gainers we have domains like eHow, mashable, YouTube, eBay along with popular social networking sites and blogging services. The page view, stick time and link share including recommendation of such websites are really impressive.

On the other hand, among losers we have popular article sites like ezinearticles, associatedcontent, hubpages along with various technology blogs and sites that either create content based on search demand or sites that recycle content from other sources. Few of these sites have good stick time but the page view, link share and recommendations are not as good as that of gainers.

(For more details you can check out by yourself in Google Trends for websites)

Conclusion:

Based on our analysis it can be concluded that we need to look out few things before marketing our website.

Make your content as unique as possible. Portray as if you are presenting something relevant but unique information.

Websites which are dealing with products can include users review which will in turn make their content unique one. Also make sure that you can encourage visitors and buyers to review your product.

Make your website design and navigations user friendly, such that it can influence user’s engagement.

Allow easy sharing of your website links through social media.

We will recommend sharing of your website url through facebook share rather than poking through your facebook page.

Avoid elements like unwanted ads and pop-ups that look annoying for users.

Set up any analytics tool to monitor your users stick time and page view specially those who are arriving through your niche keyword search results.

Lastly we would like to remind you that website should primarily be meant for the users not for ads, revenues or search engine exposure. So just follow Google Webmasters Guidelines and make your website a real user friendly one.

Google PageRank is a topic that had a long debate both amongst professional search engine specialists and ‘ordinary people’. Many agrees to the fact that PageRank is a measurement and was only useful in the past, while others point out the value that PageRank continues to have in the field of SEO. But the fact is, PageRank is just a number showing up in the Google Toolbar, informing you about the global value that a page might have (or had) as seen by Google.

Google Employee, Webmaster Tools Analyst, Susan Moskwa says “We’ve been telling people for a long time that they shouldn’t focus on PageRank so much; many site owners seem to think it’s the most important metric for them to track, which is simply not true. We removed it because we felt it was silly to tell people not to think about it, but then to show them the data, implying that they should look at it.”

In my opinion, why would you worry about a mythical number that may or may not influence your rankings? Instead it’s better to focus on what you can change to increase your website traffic by attracting visitors.

If you’re an enterprise with more than 10 users, Google’s free app service is no more a free service available to you. You will have to forget the thought from now. The search engine giant Google has mentioned on its enterprise blog, that enterprise with more than 10 users will have to avail for their paid service i.e. Google Apps for Business. This new rule will come to effect from May 10, 2011.

The existing users of Google’s app services will remain aloof from the payments, and can expand their user base up to 50 without additional charges. The groups with less than 10 users will continue to enjoy free app services by Google. The new charges include a US$50 per-user annual plan, or users could pick a no-contract US$5 per-user, per-month “flexible plan”.

The service will be billed by Google at the end of every month and is currently being offered as direct debit in 8 countries – the US, the UK, Austria, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain. An enterprising brand otherwise, this move by Google was triggered post disappointing shares figures that it put up on the board. It is now concentrating on simplifying the setup wizard of the business app services which should be, according to the blog post, up and running soon.

Today I would like to address one of the most overlooked issues of onpage SEO “The url structure”. Though, many webmasters still have second thoughts regarding the contribution and effectiveness of SEO friendly Url. But I would like to part off myself from those geeks.
Even if you have a look over Google webmaster central blog regarding Url structure you will find that, they have recommended keeping your Url structure as simple as possible. I have always insisted my clients to build such Url structure that itself acts a title and can be termed as pretty Url. Let’s see, how we can make best use of our Urls through proper Url structure.

1. Using keyword in URL to increase relevancy:

We usually think about keyword relevancy while selecting the domain name but often neglect the same logic while building internal pages. Always try to have a keyword relevant page name. This gives addition weight and relevancy to the search term you are targeting.
For example, we are having a internal service page on seo and internet marketing. Thus we can have a url structure like

http://www.websys.co.in/seo-internet-marketing.html rather than

http://www.websys.co.in/service2.html

2. Hierarchy structure within url:

Logical hierarchy based url structure helps users to figure out the how pages are correlated with each other. It also facilitate in proper categorizing the webpage by search spider.

Ex: a) Good url: http://www.websys.co.in/seo-internet-marketing/keyword-ranking.html
Bad url:
http://www.websys.co.in/keyword-ranking.html

b)Good url:
http://www.your_domain.com/compact-system-cameras/Sony/NEX-5-Black-18-55-lens/

Bad url:
http://www.your_domain.com/online.store/products/77650/show.html

3. Canonicalise www and Non-www :

Again, I would like to address one of the tiny issues often unnoticed by developers and webmaster “duplicate content”. The non-www URL is returning the same page as the www version. This means that, it is effectively creating two exact copies of the same website.

The solution is either you can use canonical tag (<meta name=”canonical” content=”http://www.websys.co.in” />) or you can use 301 redirect for non-www URL.

4. Handling non-Secure Https pages:

This is an advance level of correcting duplicate content that usually arises in those website which uses relative url structure for navigation. In such cases when user enters into any secure pages using https connection and navigates to other pages from there, the url retains the https connection. So you are having the same content for both http and https pages.
To overcome this issue, make sure that for all none secured areas or pages, the https versions is having a 301 redirected pointing to the corrected http versions.

5. The Trailing Slash:

This is another duplicate content issue. The problem in such cases arises from those websites which renders same content for both Urls ie. with and without the trailing slash. Correcting the issue is straight forward and can be fixed with a simple 301 redirect rule for all pages without a trailing slash pointing to the version with a trailing slash.

6. Rendering Index file:

Almost 8 among 10 websites are suffering with this issue. It happens when your root directory is projecting the same page as that of the index file (index.html or index.php or index.aspx etc.).
For example:
http://www.your_domain.com/
and
http://www.your_domain.com/index.php
renders the same page that flags the issue of duplicate content

This can be corrected by canonical tag in index.php or using 301 redirect of all such urls.

7. Handling Category IDs:

Many websites specially those having CMS and shopping cart, uses category id as http request for passing product ids through header. In such cases the Url structure become quite ugly.

For ex: http://www.example.com/product.aspx?ID=11526&IT=5f7d3d

These letters and symbols in a URL means absolutely nothing to either a human visitor or a search engine spider.
My advice will be, developers can programmatically define these category ids corresponding to their unique product name so that such type of url can transform from ugly url to pretty url.

Multilingual SEO or International SEO means Search Engine Optimization services for websites created using Foreign languages, Languages other than English, which is the most widely used on the Internet. Without going into a debate against statistical people, who might come and say there are way more Chinese websites or Russian websites or Spanish websites, I think it is more safe to say that English based websites are more popular and often more competitive to rank on Search Engines .

As a local SEO provider from Kolkata, India we have a lot of clients who like to rank their websites for local clients and have their websites in English and not Bengali or Hindi. As a SEO service provider we also have a lot of customers from UK, USA, Australia etc. who evidently hire us for getting their websites top 10 rank on Google.co.uk or Google.com . But as a progressive and professional Internet marketing company, we take it as a exciting challenge and love when we get website owners who want us to rank their foreign language based website made in Italian, or French or Turkish .

In the past 2 months, our team of SEO experts have been working diligently on such an Italian language based website. Having a co-operative webmaster to liaison with, we were able to work out proper translations for their website content / copy. In the initial few weeks, we ironed out a few issues with keyword placements and proper density. Following it up with some dedicated link building and a well built linking structure, I am happy to proclaim that we have managed to not only achieve ranks such as 1, 2, 2, 6, 3, 9 the site also has been given Google Authority on a term.

We knew that the task would not be very easy , given the market conditions, new happenings in the SEO world etc etc. However , one thing we had in mind was that we would not be just another SEO company. The SEO team we have at WEBSYS is energetic , adaptable and I am happy to say also very successful in what what we do for clients.

We also planned that by SEO , we would not be limited to the typical tasks of simply On Page optimisation and Directory submissions . On select cases we have also managed and monitored Adwords campaign for clients.

Besides managing and optimising their websites, we have also tutored customers about What SEO is , how it can help them and their business and what SEO should not be and how they can have their own in-house operators who can carry on generating content as well .

It has been a good start to a great journey and in the next year , we plan to increase upon the educating clients part . In order to do so , we have started a series of articles on this Blog through which we intend to offer more tips about SEO , websites in General , marketing and in very near future , put in Videos as well .

Some of the well known video streaming platforms have been really excellent choices for video SEO because of their exposure, their allowance on meta data feed and not to be forgetten their highly intelligent automatic sitemap integration capabilities and a few more. Some are okay and a few are exceptionally good, while a handfull are there whereby if you want to optimize video for your website, you would find no option but to cross them off the list. Unfortunately, Viddler is one of those video streaming and hosting platforms that hardly work out well when it comes to video optimization. Viddler is one the nicest platforms I have ever come across, because of many advantages like clearer clips, lower buffer time, than some of its competitors. All the more Viddler has been uniquely designed to come up with highly demanding features like video commenting capabilities, downloading feature at same resolution and clearance etc. Viddler offers some excellent values to the business by offering solutions like custom logo at $100 per month for the “Business” version or commercial license. But even after providing with all these exceptional features, Viddler does not work at all if you are planning to optimize it for getting video search results for your business website site. Since you cannot optimize Viddler video embeds on your own website, you may want to spare a second thought about whether the unique features of viddler are really worthy enough to buy them at $100 per month. What does it actually mean when I say you cannot optimize Viddler video embeds? Well, if you have studies well, I am sure you you have noticed Viddler.com itself does show up very well in Google video and universal search results. But no search engine including Google has ever shown up videos embedded from Viddler for the domains that have embedded Viddler code. I am talking about the ability of the viddler users who embed viddler video in their web pages and want to optimize the videos with a hope that the search engine will show up videos embedded from Viddler for the web pages having Viddler video embedded. So why does this happen? Technical reason is involved! Viddler has blocked the search engine bots from accessing the player using robots.txt on their CDN. which resists the search engines to crawl or index the Uniform Resource Locators of Viddler players. If you have to do VSEO for your website, viddler is yet not a wise option to pick.

Upcoming launch of Digg.com , the social news gatherer. Continue reading →

So eventually after long time Digg is working on some new Design and neater interface. You can glimpse the new Digg website at New.Digg.com. You will find the New Design, New Buttons, neater interface and more. The new Website is not yet accessible currently but you can access it by New.Digg.com and signup for the previews of the new Digg features.
The new Digg was first revealed in March by previous CEO Jay Adelson, who has since paced down. Later, Digg founder Kevin Rose took over as CEO as the company focuses on building a more Twitter-like experience to finding out content.
In a signal that the launch of the new type of Digg is imminent, the social media company has turned off new user registrations for Digg.com.
To know more about the new version of Digg, visit Digg.com/register and you’ll be greeted with a note saying that the new Digg is coming, and prompting would-be new users to sign up for e-mail notifications for the relaunch of the social news service. Digg is probably porting facts and figures over from the previous version of Digg to the new one and doesn’t desire to depart out new users in the switch.
Its heard from a source that there is a lot of pressure on Kevin Rose and the Digg team to get this relaunch perfectly since Digg has been gradually losing users for the last year. I , for one, as a part of WEBSYS social media team, am looking anxiously towards what will happen next and how to benefit from it , while working on Search Engine Optimization and Internet Marketing at WEBSYS.
